Don't Be, Just Follow
Happy New Year Friends!
As you know, this is the time of new commitments and resolutions. Some people look forward to the clean slate that a new year offers, while others only commit to no commitments when the clock strikes twelve. Either way, the intention behind the goal is to have better, do better and ultimately BE better. But here's the thing, the Holy Spirit let me in on a different perspective that I want to share with you (since ya'll are my girls)!
It is not your responsibility to be better. Not only that, it's not in your power or your job description as a child of God. The entirety of the Gospel hangs on the fact that God has poured out Heaven to empower you to be what you could never be without Him. Righteous. Anytime we try to be the things that God requires of us, we do a disservice to ourselves by trying to write a check your own strength can't cash. Scripture describes it in these terms:
having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. - 2 Timothy 3:5
When you try to be better, it is a talentless show. It appears to be of God but there is no power behind the punch, and since there is no source of power, you can't sustain the act. But, as always with Christ, there is good news! There is a power within that you can pull from that with give your resolutions staying power. And that is where the Holy Spirit takes center stage. Feel free to bow out sis.
Want to see what a real resolution looks like? Take a look at Galatians 5:22-23
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Doesn't that sound like a good person, or rather a better person than you are right now? But notice the highlighted part of the verse. All of these traits are a fruit of the Spirit. Fruit is the end product of endless processes and work. All initiated and facilitated by the Spirit, the power at work in all believers. Make as many resolutions as you want, but if you want to be better, don't be, just follow. Follow after the Spirit and He will produce the fruit of better within you.
I want to leave you with a few scriptures about your powerlessness to be and the power of the Holy Spirit.
So he answered me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by strength or by might, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of Hosts. - Zechariah 4:6
7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. - 2 Timothy 1:7
I cannot begin to convey to you how excited I am for this new year. As we jump in with both feet, let's remember that progress in Christ and in life is not dependent on how hard we try to be, but how well we can follow the One that has the power to transform us. Don't be, Just Follow!
Love ya Sis,
